Poetry Writing Workshop: Grades 9-12

This is not your mother’s poetry class. Come read sonnets about texting. Let’s argue about whether Taylor Swift is more a Romantic poet like Wordsworth or a Confessional poet like Plath or not a poet at all. Help decide if an “Ode to a Grecian Urn” is really any more worthwhile than an “Ode to a Composting Toilet.”

We’ll talk about contemporary poetry and what value it has in our modern lives. We’ll think about how such a subversive art form got such a boring, snooty reputation.

In this 4-class series young writers will discover the joy of poetry and learn to find their own voice. Every class we’ll use different prompts, exercises, games to spark creativity and get the words out.

We’ll share, collaborate, and learn how to discuss each other’s work constructively.

In addition to writing, we’ll investigate various poetic devices, different poetic schools, various forms (haikus, sonnets, villanelles, ghazals, sestinas, prose poems, ect) and how to use them.

Kate Hubbard is a professional writer and East Haven resident. She has a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from New England College and has been previously published in a number of journals and anthologies.
